The other day at work during my break I read an article in the Toronto Star about water scarcity in India. It was both interesting and heartbreaking at the same time, particularly because I was reading the article here in Canada where we have an abundance of water. The article in a nutshell was about how India's water problem will be a huge problem in the future because of its growing population. The water shortage means that there is less water for agriculture and less water for subsistence. I shudder to think of the future implications of this in a country where the population will probably hit 2 billion in a few decades.

Most people in India, like their ancestors, depend on the land. Their livelihoods, culture, family, everything is embedded in the land, and if there isn't anyway to make a living and sustain themselves off of it than what will happen?

I just read a book called "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry which focused on the subject of poverty in India. It doesn't focus on the water shortage problem, but it does give a very good understanding about the political system in India and how it doesn't seem to work for the nations poorest. I recommend it (and so does Oprah).
